Where do I even begin。 This is just an ok read。 The premise and characters are interesting, but the writing needs to be worked on。 The writing is flat and uninteresting, and gets worse as it goes on。 The first 3 sections are incredibly long, and the author spend too much time between world building and being descriptive。 The last sections are very rushed, and the chapters are barely a page or two。 When you're alternating between two points of view, this gets jarring every few pages。 You can tell Where do I even begin。 This is just an ok read。 The premise and characters are interesting, but the writing needs to be worked on。 The writing is flat and uninteresting, and gets worse as it goes on。 The first 3 sections are incredibly long, and the author spend too much time between world building and being descriptive。 The last sections are very rushed, and the chapters are barely a page or two。 When you're alternating between two points of view, this gets jarring every few pages。 You can tell the author felt the book was getting too long, and just ended it。The other weak part is the romance。 You don't feel the romance build, and it's more like the author wants them to be together so they have to。 It doesn't feel natural at all。 Honestly, if the author didn't have the side characters telling you that the main characters are attrached to each other, you wouldn't pick up on it。 Even they don't pick up on it。 Literally。 Overall, could have been better written。 。。。more

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for a free ARC in exchange for a review。Did you ship Zuko and Katara as a child?

A fine and easy read。 Nothing super crazy but I did enjoy it and it kept me entertained。 I don’t really have any super demanding critiques or praises, but I did like it。 One thing I will say though is I liked Altman and Ahn much more as friends then as a couple。 The romantic part of their relationship often felt forced to me, they seemed to fit much better together as friends。 But I did think that little last scene with them together was cute and authentic。

Overall, I liked the book。 My only complaint is that the ending feels a little rushed in my opinion。 Either the story should have progressed a little faster and made the ending last a little longer or carried on into another book。 My understanding is that this is a standalone book so the epilogue confuses me。 I would have liked to be able to explore this world a little more but unfortunately that’s not the case。 I’m looking forward to reading more books from this author。

Oh my gosh! My first 4。5/5 star read of the year! It doesn’t quite get a 5 star because I feel like the ending was a little rushed。 But oh boy that ending! I hope there is going to be a sequel!!

。。。more

I enjoyed this book。 I loved that it was told in the perspective of 2 main characters and you got to intricately know what each was feeling instead of what 1 was inferring about the other character。 I do wish it had a pronunciation guide but overall I loved it。 The twist in the epilogue makes me want more。

Ooof I really thought I was going to love this but it fell flat。 The plot? Meh, very derivative of other popular series。 Characters? Okay。 Romance? Weak and unconvincing。 A very convoluted and unsatisfying ya fantasy book that did not understand the assignment (in my opinion。 This book is generally fairly highly rated so I think I just didn’t personally vibe with it。)

I enjoyed this, but felt that it could have been a better story if it was stretched out and adult instead of YA。 3。5*s

This is the kind of book that I didn’t want to put down, full of magic, secrets, and adventure, and it made for such an enjoyable read。There was a lot to love in this book, the world-building was fantastic, I loved the contrast in the different settings and how this affects the characters。 The mythology within the story was amazing, I won’t say too much, but I loved how the history changed depending on who told it and how it became shaped by people in every retelling。 The magic in the book was r This is the kind of book that I didn’t want to put down, full of magic, secrets, and adventure, and it made for such an enjoyable read。There was a lot to love in this book, the world-building was fantastic, I loved the contrast in the different settings and how this affects the characters。 The mythology within the story was amazing, I won’t say too much, but I loved how the history changed depending on who told it and how it became shaped by people in every retelling。 The magic in the book was really interesting, the fact that it had to be hidden in some places but was more welcomed in others added a wonderful dynamic to the story, especially as Ahn struggles to control her abilities。Whilst the writing was engaging and easily sucked me in, the pacing was not quite right in places, I do think there were possibly some middle sections that could have been shortened and more time spent on the ending。 I feel like the story built to a super exciting point but then started to feel rushed, it kind of awkwardly jumped through the last sections and there wasn’t a flow to keep that excitement up, this didn’t stop my enjoyment it just left me a little deflated at the end。The characters were great, I didn’t know how to read Altan at first and I enjoyed seeing him develop as he came up against different obstacles on his journey, Ahn is great from the start, a bit of a mystery even to herself but loving and loyal。 I enjoyed their chemistry but I’m not sure I was entirely sold on their relationship, it was very slow burn which I enjoyed because nobody knows who to trust at a lot of points in the story which is always fun, I can’t put my finger on it but I feel like something was missing。The other characters in the story were also interesting, I am particularly intrigued by Tai Shun and Leiye and wish I got to know more about these two characters especially but I am hoping that since the ending was left a little bit open that this is maybe going to be explored in another book。 Wishful thinking perhaps but I would gladly read more about all of these characters and how their world further evolves after the events of this story。A brilliant debut and I am looking forward to seeing what wonderful worlds this author takes me to next。Originally posted on everywhere and nowhere 。。。more

So, the first 80% of this book was good (minus the ‘romance’) - but the last 20% bit of a let down! I love Avatar, so not a huge issue, but at times it felt like copy and paste。- The pacing was iffy for me。 At times we would jump days or weeks ahead, and then spend a lot of time on a few hours。 Age RatingYoung AdultWho I Would Recommend This Book ToFans of Avatar: The Last Airbender, We Hunt the Flame, and the "I may have to kill you but I find myself liking you and that might be a problem" trope。Content to Watch Out ForViolence, self harm, the author has a really good list on her website! 。。。more

Fire wielding priests, magic swords, spies and imperial politics make up June C。L Tan's debut novel。 Her novel follows the lives of two characters, Ahn and Altan。 Ahn a simple peasant girl from the desert who finds out she has a much greater destiny that she had ever hoped for and Altan the boy who had his birth right ripped away from him and is now fighting to get it back。 While I greatly enjoyed the characters I must say they are predictable by following the general YA fantasy plot。 There were Fire wielding priests, magic swords, spies and imperial politics make up June C。L Tan's debut novel。 Her novel follows the lives of two characters, Ahn and Altan。 Ahn a simple peasant girl from the desert who finds out she has a much greater destiny that she had ever hoped for and Altan the boy who had his birth right ripped away from him and is now fighting to get it back。 While I greatly enjoyed the characters I must say they are predictable by following the general YA fantasy plot。 There were no twists or surprises but both characters were loveable in their own ways。 The integration of Chinese imperial dynamics and mythology is great to read in a YA novel。 It really exposes the difference of an another culture and how easy it is to write and incorporate YA outside of a white western world。 I would have loved a map in the book though, as there is a lot of movement around this fantasy world and even though the characters tell you where they are going, I would have loved to actually see where they were going with a map to guide me。 The novel is an easy and simple read, the pace is slow in the beginning and middle and in my opinion moves much too quickly in the end。 The writing style is straightforward to read but for me it lacked depth。 I love falling into the characters mind, watching through their eyes and thoughts as events unfold。 Here though it just felt like I was being told what the character felt and saw。 As its a debut novel, I feel like June。C。L。 Tan has room to grow here to add more depth to her characters。 But other than that, it was a good debut novel that many readers from all different kinds of backgrounds can enjoy。 。。。more

I adore this book。 It is a great book with such strong family themes。 It also has a dragon and a phoenix which I love。 Ahn and Altan are such great main characters that have such amazing character development throughout the novel。 There were times I teared up at what was happening and I never tear up at books。 I kept trying to guess what was going to happen in this book, which is something that I am usually pretty good at, but for some reason, with this book I couldn't do that。 And that final ch I adore this book。 It is a great book with such strong family themes。 It also has a dragon and a phoenix which I love。 Ahn and Altan are such great main characters that have such amazing character development throughout the novel。 There were times I teared up at what was happening and I never tear up at books。 I kept trying to guess what was going to happen in this book, which is something that I am usually pretty good at, but for some reason, with this book I couldn't do that。 And that final chapter。。。Wow。 I went straight to goodreads to see if there was a sequel listed, but there is not。 I need a sequel。 The ending felt like set up for one。 I just need more in this world。 。。。more

You know when your expectations are so high but you are only met with disappointment and it feels like being doused with cold water ? Yeah this book felt exactly like that。 Like I don’t even have a quote to open this review with, which makes my point even more concrete。 The fact is the story was amazing。 The plot was unique in it’s own way (and yes the Chinese folklore and myths weren’t lost on me)。 But the execution was so poor that I was this close to dropping it。 Everything was so rushed that You know when your expectations are so high but you are only met with disappointment and it feels like being doused with cold water ? And don’t even get me started on the ending, it was so vague plus weird (for the lack of a better term)。 And oh god the epilogue… What was the point of all of Altan’s misery and suffering then ??I guess having to complete the whole story in a single book did mean it was going to be a fast paced book but seriously what was this… 。。。more

Lots of mixed feelings, but overall I think it was a pretty good story! I thought it started out really strong, but it kind of dwindled at the end and left me wanting。 I didn't completely feel the chemistry between Ahn and Altan。 It was there to some degree, but I think because the author would do things like, "It's been two weeks since we left the palace。。。", I felt like I didn't get to see as many interactions between the two as I would have liked。 I also didn't feel that the there was a ton o Lots of mixed feelings, but overall I think it was a pretty good story!
